TOGETHER 2025

November 15, 2025

Dear parents and friends,

God built us to enjoy his creation. At John Knox Christian School we know that God’s children thrive when they spend time outside during the school day. Stepping out into the sunshine and delighting in the natural elements contribute to their wellbeing and joy.

Most days after school, you can find brothers James and Bryce, and their friends, playing soccer on the gravel field behind the elementary campus. “It’s really slippery,” says grade three student Bryce. “You can get injured on the gravel,” adds grade four student James.

The gravel field serves as an important play space, creative outlet and education centre for all of our elementary classes. Mrs. Johnson, who teaches grade two and is a librarian at our school, explains that developing coordination, strength and fitness through outdoor play is just as important as the skills our students learn inside the classroom.

“Outdoor education is both curricular and social learning, meaning our students learn sports skills like how to play soccer and social skills like how to be a team player,” she says. “That breath of fresh air helps with academics, too. After being outside, our students have better emotional regulation and can focus in the classroom.”

But sometimes gravel and other structural issues can get in the way of play. “When I was in kindergarten, I tripped through a hole [in the gravel field] and both my knees and elbows were bleeding,” says Bryce.

As a parent to four JKCS students, Mrs. Johnson knows first-hand that Bryce isn’t the only student visiting the school’s first aid station. “When it rains and the playground floods and the gravel gets slippery, play is hindered,” she says. “No school will ever have perfect outdoor spaces, but we can make them safer and more inviting for everyone.”

Our secondary campus faces some unique outdoor challenges as well. The limited square footage of the building, which opened in 2019, meant that our two outdoor spaces couldn’t be green–instead we built a lower courtyard and a rooftop patio. For students entering grade seven, the transition to smaller outdoor spaces can be hard.

Last school year Luis, then a grade seven student, didn’t use the courtyard much for play. “Usually when I was outside in the courtyard I was either eating lunch or someone challenged me to a one versus one in basketball, but that wasn’t too often.”

Mr. Wasik, principal at our secondary campus explains, “We have students who are still really enthusiastic and ready for play, but a courtyard that has some limitations, so over the summer we made some enhancements that focus on community-building and play.”

Now in grade eight, Luis says, “I’m there every lunch and every morning before school starts now that the Gaga Ball pit has been installed. It’s a great place. And the benches and picnic tables are really nice for lunch, too.”

But students like Luis aren’t able to enjoy the courtyard year round because of a lack of shelter from the elements. “For the entire day I feel a bit disappointed that I can’t go outside because of the rain or because it’s too hot and there’s no shade,” says Luis.

“Students build resiliency learning to play through rainy weather,” says Mr. Wasik. “But at the same time, if our outdoor spaces were more adaptible, teachers would book more outdoor class time and students would spend more time outside.”

Together, we can create more safety and joy in our outdoor play spaces. Will you make a gift today?

All funds raised will go towards our Play It Forward campaign which includes two major investments: our elementary campus will see new surfacing and drainage repair, a multi use sports area, and a new playground. The secondary campus will receive a rain covering for the courtyard. Play It Forward also allocates funds to support our building debt responsibilities. Once we reach the Play It Forward funding goal, work will start.

Please give generously today.

God bless you and your loved ones this Christmas,
Dr. David Ward
