Our History

1955

Out of much prayer, planning, and hard work, JKCS is born, its life closely intertwined with the group of Dutch immigrants who brought it forth: New West Christian Reformed Church (NWCRC). They share a facility for 7 years: four classrooms, divided by temporary partitions, accommodate 65 K-7 students who help pack up the desks and classrooms each Friday afternoon to make space for Sunday worship. Sunday nights, the facility transforms into classrooms once again for another week of school. Two teachers and a principal who does double-duty as a teacher, lead the new student body.

1956

It is clear that the Lord is blessing this new school: by September, 103 students are enrolled.

1962-1963

NWCRC moves into its new building across the street, giving JKCS room to grow. A new wing is built onto the school, adding 5 new classrooms. With no gymnasium, students cross the street for P.E. classes in the meeting hall of the church.

1974-1978

With so many students coming from across the bridge in Surrey, a decision is made to start a satellite campus in Surrey. This new campus opens in September 1978 with 78 students, relieving some of the crowded conditions at JKCS.

1990

God continues to be faithful, and JKCS has once again grown to capacity. Plans are made for an expansion which will include a gymnasium, office space, library, and more classrooms to accommodate the growing K-7 student population.

1995

With great thanks to the Lord, JKCS celebrates its 40th Anniversary in the new gymnasium.

2000

It does not take long for the student body to outgrow the 1995 expansion, and plans are set in motion to finally add grades 8 through 12. Boards and committees meet to pray, discuss, and plan how to implement these goals.

2004

The Lord provides a space for JKCS to open a Middle School, just 5 minutes from the elementary campus. Families on waiting lists are contacted with good news that there is space enough for their children, as the two campuses grow to over 300 students.

2005

JKCS realizes a K-12 dream by opening the doors of the new Carver Christian High School, in partnership with Vancouver Christian School (VCS).

2008-2010

The story always continues with God’s faithfulness: JKCS is bursting at the seams, so by necessity the building is torn down and rebuilt over two years. In March of 2010, its new doors are opened to offer (along with the history and foundations of a 55-year-old school) the new, fresh technologies and amenities of a brand new building. Within 6 months the school is at capacity.

2018 AND BEYOND

JKCS opened our secondary campus for Grades 7-12 in September 2018, allowing our school to offer K-12 Christian education. We thank God for His provision for our school over the decades!
