Healthcare has always intrigued me. It is a field that impacts all of us, yet it feels distant, something complex and difficult to explore firsthand. Unlike other careers, you can’t just walk into a hospital and observe a surgeon at work or watch an occupational therapist help someone regain mobility. That’s why, as a co-founder of HawksMD, I wanted to bring those experiences closer to students at our school. I wanted to help others develop an interest in the health sciences, to see the real-world impact of these professions, and to inspire the next generation of healthcare leaders.
On Tuesday, February 18, 2025, HawksMD hosted its second annual Healthcare Career Fair, providing students with a unique opportunity to learn about various healthcare careers. Teachers brought classes down throughout the day, encouraging students to engage in conversations and explore the different paths within the health sciences. Students interacted with professionals from diverse fields, including occupational therapy, immunology, nursing, dietetics, pharmacy, and medical interpretation. Representatives from Royal Columbian Hospital (RCH) were also present to offer unique volunteering opportunities. The event was hands-on and interactive. Students tried out basic CPR techniques, participated in pediatric occupational therapy exercises, and learned about other practical aspects of healthcare work. The fair allowed students to gain a glimpse into the daily lives and activities of healthcare professionals, understanding not only the technical skills required but also the compassion and dedication needed in these careers. I believe that career fairs like these help demystify the healthcare field and stray away from the stereotypes, showing students that it’s not just about doctors and nurses, but a wide network of specialists working together to care for patients.
HawksMD is grateful to all the professionals who volunteered their time and shared their experiences. We also appreciate the teachers who encouraged students to ask questions and engage actively! Seeing students’ curiosity and enthusiasm was a reminder of why we started this club in the first place. As we continue to grow, HawksMD remains committed to inspiring students and helping them explore the many opportunities within healthcare. We look forward to next year’s fair and are excited to see where these experiences will take our students!
Thank you to everyone who made this event a success!
