Grade 8 students have been building Tin Men in math as a wrap up to their Surface Area Unit. They were asked to construct a Tin Man out of various materials they formed into prisms, cylinders, cones or spheres. Once constructed, students had to calculate the total surface area, with the help of a formula sheet for shapes not covered in class, and submit their final calculations to receive the foil needed to turn their creation into a Tin Man. Gaps in the foil cover, or foil remaining helped students to see how accurate their calculations were.
