Knox Walk 2022

ArushaTimes News, Upcoming Events

The Knox Walk is just a week away!
First up, let’s pray for a beautiful sunny day so that we can enjoy our 5km walk to Queen’s Park. A few reminders as we head into the home stretch:
Fundraising pages: If you have not yet set up your child(ren)’s fundraising page(s), you can do so at knox-walk-2022.raisely.com. Each JKCS student is asked to raise $175 for the Knox Walk! This long weekend could be a good opportunity to make and sell crafts or cookies, connect with church friends, and email your aunt across the country!
Wear RED: Students, parent walkers, and staff should all wear a red tshirt for the Knox Walk. A PE shirt is a great choice, but any red shirt will do. PE tshirts in child and adult sizes are available at the elementary office for just $10 each. All walkers should dress for whatever weather is expected that day: wear a raincoat if it’s raining, wear sunscreen and a hat if it’s sunny. We will be walking rain or shine!

Elementary: Share Your Music Days

ArushaTimes News, Upcoming Events

Students in kindergarten to grade 3 (primary) will have an opportunity to perform for their classmates during music classes June 6-10. Many students are practicing at home for a recital this time of year and we would love to hear what they are learning! Students are welcome to share something they practice at home or during lessons: singing, dance, poetry, piano, violin, etc. Perhaps your child knows a song from Sunday School that they could sing for us.
This is casual and we look forward to a huge variety of music talents and all levels. Share Your Music Day is a safe and encouraging environment to share something for others even if it’s for the very first time! The goal is to have students perform live but there may be exceptions if parents would like to send a video of their child’s part in a dance recital, for example, or if their musical instrument is too large to bring to school. This is totally optional and there is no pressure for students to perform.
Please email Mrs. Visser if you have any questions and be sure to include your child’s name and class: rvisser@johnknoxbc.org

Knox Walk 2022!

ArushaTimes News, Upcoming Events

May is Knox Walk month! The Knox Walk is a massive K-12 fundraising event culminating in all 700 students, 100 staff, and 200 parents going on a 5km walk to Queen’s Park and back. For the past two years, this event morphed into “Knox Walk: In Your Neighbourhood” as a response to pandemic requirements, but this year we are excited to welcome back the event in its traditional form.

A fundraiser for John Knox Christian School, the Knox Walk is an opportunity for students to raise money for projects that will impact their daily life at school and ensure that our school is around for many years to come! The elementary campus needs playground and building revitalization and the secondary campus rooftop needs safety netting and beautification. The Knox Walk tithes 10% of funds raised to a charity worthy of our support. This year we are giving to a local organization our community knows well: Journey Home. Journey Home supports recent refugees to the Metro Vancouver area with immediate housing support as well as community and emotional support born out of a desire to act as Christ did. Learn more at www.journeyhomecommunity.ca/.

Next week students will hear all about the Knox Walk and how they can support it. Parents can expect a letter detailing the event and how they can support their child(ren). In the coming weeks, we’ll put a call out for parent volunteers for the event itself.
Enjoy these photos of the Knox Walk throughout the years!

Elementary: Grandparents’ and Grand-Friends’ Day 2022

ArushaTimes News, Upcoming Events

The end of April is a time for the JKCS elementary campus to celebrate some very important people in our students’ lives: their grandparents and grand-friends. In the past, this has meant that students invited their grandparents and grand-friends to our school for a special time of musical presentations from each grade, prayer, treats and coffee served by parents and Grade 6 students, and a chance to tour classrooms. It is one of the most fun days of the whole school year!
Over the past two years we have paused welcoming grandparents into our school building due to the pandemic. Although things are looking more positive this spring we still want to be cautious with our precious senior family members and friends.
This year, we will send a video greeting to grandparents from each class. Filming will take place next week and will include a classroom tour, teacher and class greeting, and a short presentation.
Once the videos are complete near the end of April we will send a link home to parents asking you to forward it to seniors close to your children, whether it be grandparents or a senior friend from church.
We miss seeing our school grandparents at school! We hope these short video greetings will give them a fun glimpse into their grandchildren’s classroom.
