Over the past few months we have heard the word, “government” a lot more than usual as leaders across the globe have scrambled to meet their nations’ needs under a global pandemic. Our neighbours in the south have faced some of the most divisive turmoil in government in their history. And yet, at this time of year, each year, we turn to the passage in Isaiah that so aptly points us to the rule of God and the coming of a kingdom that will not end. And what words describe the leader of the kingdom of God? Tyrant? Caesar? Commander in Chief? Not so. Instead, by the grace of God, the descriptors are far more profound and lasting. As followers of Jesus we know that our commander is the Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, and the Prince of Peace. Hallelujah. As we enter a season of celebration, let’s rejoice in the King on whose shoulders the government has truly and rightly rested.
